International Print Center New York announces an exhibition
of prints by the nineteenth-century French caricaturist and
master lithographer Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) from March
11th through April 24th, 2004 in its Chelsea gallery at 526
West 26th Street. The prints will be on loan from the UCLA Hammer
Museum in Los Angeles.
Trains,
Balloons and Buggies has been guest curated for IPCNY by
Carolyn Peter,Assistant Curator, Grunwald Center for the Graphic
Arts at the UCLA Hammer Museum. In her words, Daumier's lithographs
"offer humorous insight into how people
coped with
the many trials and tribulations of travel in nineteenth-century
France. The exhibition
also takes a look at some of the
more whimsical types of transport found in Daumier's
work."
Some
fifty lithographs by Daumier, drawn from the Armand Hammer Daumier
and Contemporaries Collection, will be on view. Subject matter
varies from the horse-drawn carts and carriages in the agrarian
French countryside to the urban adventure of the Parisian omnibus
to the excitement of early air travel in the newly invented
hot-air balloon.
The development of the railroad in the early part of the 19th
century, writes Ms.Peter,
had " far-reaching effects on French society
not missed
by the sharp eye and pencil
of the caricaturist Honoré Daumier."
Documents
illustrating the process through which Daumier's original lithographs
reached the pages of Le Charivari, a popular satirical journal
of the day, will also be included in the exhibition.
