International Print Center New York announces the presentation of ROMANCE AND SOLITUDE: American Prints 1900-1941, Selections from the Collection of Theodore C. Rogers, opening on Friday, March 1st and remaining on view through Saturday, April 27th, 2002. IPCNY is located at 526 West 26th Street, Room 824. The prints in the exhibition date from the early years of the 20th century and include outstanding examples of the work of Peggy Bacon, Will Barnet, George Bellows, Howard Cook, Mabel Dwight, Edward Hopper, Martin Lewis, John Sloan and Benton Spruance. These images, ranging in mood from joy to melancholy, represent a sampling of Theodore C. Rogers' comprehensive collection of American etchings, aquatints, drypoints, lithographs and wood engravings. The forty-five works selected for the exhibition span the years from 1900 to 1941. As stated in the collector's introductory note: "At the turn of the century the United States had just recovered from a severe financial panic and was celebrating the victorious end of The Spanish American War. The ensuing decades saw rapid economic and technological expansion, increased velocity of urbanization, a World War, the Great Depression, and the gathering storm of yet another world conflict. Values, expectations, beliefs, and the moral life of the nation were all in a state of accelerating flux. The meaning of both romance and solitude were altered. This exhibition allows us to consider these changes through the eye of the artist." |
