New Prints 2009/Spring -
International Print Center New York presents New Prints 2009/Spring – Selected by Polly Apfelbaum in its gallery at 526 West 26th Street, Room 824, between 10th and 11th Avenues in Chelsea. On view from April 23 until May 30, the show consists of sixty-two pieces by fifty-three emerging to established artists, selected from a pool of nearly 2,100 submissions. A reception will be held at IPCNY on April 23, from 6-8 pm.
New Prints 2009/Spring is the thirty-first presentation of IPCNY’s New Prints Program, a series of juried exhibitions organized by IPCNY four times each year, featuring prints made within the past twelve months by artists at all stages of their careers. The exhibition represents a cross-section of some of the most exceptional printmaking today while continuing IPCNY’s commitment to provide an ongoing exhibition venue for contemporary prints and a major source of information about artists working in the medium.

Highlights of New Prints 2009/Spring include: Carroll Dunham’s Untitled, an etching and aquatint of a tree, rendered in loose, voluminous lines; William Kentridge’s Nose 9,an intimate sugarlift, aquatint, and drypoint that depicts a giant nose with human legs astride a horse; Noah Breuer’s lithograph and silkscreen collage, Superior Airpower Pinwheel 3, a spinning electric pinwheel composed of modern warplanes; Susan Rothenberg’s Puppet Series, a suite of mezzotints picturing puppets suspended from strings in black, liminal spaces; Tomory Dodge’s Drop, an 18-color screenprint with brightly-colored, brush-like gestures; Tamar Cohen’s Fun with Spools, a screenprint collage of fiery orange dots on pages torn from vintage books; and Ann Hamilton’s script series, multi-color lithographs with chine-collé, that look like hand-crafted approximations of blank pages torn from pocket diaries.
In addition to the many independent artists included in this show, the presses, publishers and printshops represented include: Axelle Editions, Brooke Alexander Editions, Burnet Editions, CRG Editions, David Krut Print Workshop, Dolan Maxwell, Editions Fawbush, Forth Estate, Fresh Hot Press, Gemini G.E.L., Harlan & Weaver, Jungle Press Editions, Lower East Side Printshop, One Eye Pug, Paulson Press, and Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.
With rare exceptions, prints included in IPCNY's New Prints shows are for sale. IPCNY refers potential purchasers directly to the artist, publisher, or gallery supplying the print. IPCNY requires no commission on sales.
Polly Apfelbaum follows Kiki Smith, Richard Tuttle, James Sienna, and Jane Hammond, each of whom have acted as sole juror of an IPCNY Spring New Prints Show, respectively in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.
The New Prints Program is the core of IPCNY’s exhibition programming. New Prints 2000 launched the program in September 2000. To date, these thirty-one exhibitions have included work from over 900 artists and 200 presses across the country and abroad.
International Print Center New York is a non-profit institution founded to promote the greater appreciation and understanding of the fine art print worldwide. Through innovative programming, it fosters a climate for the enjoyment, examination and serious study of artists' prints – from the old master to the contemporary. IPCNY offers its members a program of workshop and gallery visits, and has established an informational website and Information Desk available to the public at the gallery. IPCNY depends upon public and private donations to support its programs.
The New Prints Program is funded in part with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Generous funding is provided by The Greenwall Foundation. A grant from the Robert Lehman Foundation supports IPCNY’s exhibitions programs.
