OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM aims to help students, members, print enthusiasts, and the general public expand their visual literacy skills, nurture their creative expression, and develop their appreciation of the unique role that fine art prints can play in disseminating information and ideas. All of our workshops and guided tours can be tailored to meet the educational needs and interest level of the group.

Why learn about Printmaking?

 

Printmaking is the most democratic of visual art forms. Because of the multiplicity inherent in the medium, prints have played a unique role throughout history in recording and disseminating information about other cultures; in propagating new aesthetic movements and styles; in spreading propaganda and alternative political thinking across ideological and national boundaries; in disseminating religious images around the world; and in facilitating public dialogue. Long revered by artist for its accessibility and for the opportunities it offers for innovation and experimentation through multiples, printmaking can reach a wide and disparate public, which serves, for many, as their first direct exposure to the art world. From cereal boxes to the revered work of Ellsworth Kelly, printmaking is by nature more accessible and affordable. Printmaking has been embraced by its artists not only for its accessibility but also for the opportunities it offers for innovation and experimentation, often revealing new insights and new directions in an artist’s work.

What We Offer/ Scheduling

IPCNY offers guided tours for college students and adults groups and printmaking workshops for K-12 students.

To schedule a tour or workshop, make sure to get in touch with Stephanie Trejo at least 4 weeks in advance. If you would like an artist or curator to be present, please contact us five to six weeks in advance. Students

– Welcome and introductions with Director

– Short tour of current exhibition led by artist
educator with a discussion of key prints in the
show; Private discussions with printmaking
artists and/or curators about the works in the
show (depending on availability)

– Discussion of printmaking techniques such as
woodblock, etching, engraving, and silkscreen,
with a presentation of printmaking tools

-Kid friendly printmaking activity tailored to the
current show. Previous activities have included
pop-up books, intaglio on styrofoam,
linocut, and silkscreened t-shirts.

Students

STUDY CENTER

The Study Center is open seasonally in our Viewing Room. As part of our mission to be a resource and learning center for students, artists, and educators, we have curated a small and instructive display of printmaking tools and techniques in our viewing room. We’ve included examples of intaglio and relief printmaking styles for reference and have juxtaposed examples of matrices and their printed counterparts for further examination. The Study Center also functions as a small library of printmaking books and we welcome visitors to sit, study, and enjoy.

The Study Center is open to all visitors and we encourage students and classes in particular to come and learn more about printmaking.

 GLOSSARY

What is a print?
Technically, a print is any image that is transferred from a matrix. A matrix is a physical surface that can be manipulated to hold ink. Most, though not all, matrices are able to print the same image many times.How is a color print made?
There are several ways to make a multi-color print, but the most common is to print a different matrix for each color. The matrices are precisely aligned and sequentially printed on a sheet of paper to produce a composite image.What are the inscriptions on the bottom of the print?
Traditionally, signifying inscriptions are written in pencil at the bottom of a print. Reading from left to right, the inscriptions indicate the edition number, the title of the artwork, and the artist’s name (and sometimes the date).
