PETER SAUL
Place of Residence: New York
Date of Birth: 1934
Artist's Statement
I have tried very hard to be a "crazy artist," in painting pictures, since the late 1950's when I first got the idea. I love doing it. Being against the majority of intelligent viewers and on the side of the stupid, the obvious and the insolent really gives me a thrill and makes me laugh too.
Biography
Peter Saul is a renowned painter of entertaining and provocative paintings. As an 'anti-conformist' and a 'bad boy' of painting, he mingles beauty and savagery, romance and ugliness in works that disarm the viewer. 'Saul wants to offend and please at the same time.'
Saul's work can be found in the collections of several museums around the world including The Art Institute, Chicago, IL; The Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, CA; the Musee des Beaux-Arts, Mons, Belgium; Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris, France; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden.
