In 1991, Robbin Ami Silverberg co-founded Dobbin Books alongside her existing professional papermaking studio, Dobbin Mill, which she established two years earlier in Greenpoint. Silverberg opened the artist book studio as a space where she could collaborate with artists and writers on limited edition unique books using paper she produced at the mill specifically for each project. The richly textured surfaces of the handmade papers are a hallmark of the books made at Dobbin, which publishes between five and ten artist books per year. Although she is self-taught in the art of papermaking, Silverberg completed an apprenticeship in bookbinding and book restoration at Werkstatt fur Buchgestaltung in Vienna. While much of the printing for Dobbin’s artist books is done by Silverberg, she has also collaborated with local printers including Luther Davis and James Knight.   –SR
